چکیده

The results of dielectric studies of 5-n-hexyl-2-(4'-isothiocyanato)-l,3-dioxane (6DBT) in the smectic A, phase at pressures up to 150 MPa and temperatures up to 340 K are presented. The low frequency relaxation time T\\ (/?, T) yields the activation volume AV|| = RT(d ln Tjj/9/>)rand activation enthalpy A//jj = R(d ln T | | / 3 7 ) p . The calculated values of these parameters are compared with those obtained recently for n-octyl-cyanobiphenyl (8CB) forming the smectic Ad phase. In the case of 6DBT both these quantities are practically constant, whereas those for 8CB decrease, when going away from the phase transitions isotropic smectic A] (6DBT) or nematic smectic Ad (8CB). These differences support our earlier conclusion that increase of pressure leads to a breaking of the antiparallel associations of cyanobiphenyl molecules in the smectic as well as in the nematic phases.

Study of High Frequency Relaxation Processes in Three Substances with the -CN Groups at the Lateral Positions

Three liquid crystalline (LC) substances with the cyano-groups attached at the lateral positions to the molecular cores were studied with the aid of dielectric spectroscopy methods. The high frequency relaxation process connected with the molecular reorientations around the long molecular axes was studied in the isotropic, nematic and several smectic phases. The dielectric spectra are rather co...

Dielectric Studies on Liquid Crystals under High Pressure: VI. Low Frequency Relaxation Process in the Nematic and Smectic A Phase of 4-n-Octyl-4'-Cyanobiphenyl (8 CB)

Dielectric relaxation studies of 4-n-octyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (8 CB) were performed in the pressure range 0 .1 -1 2 0 MPa, the frequency range 1 k H z-1 3 MHz and the temperature range 295-331 K. The dielectric behaviour of 8CB in the nematic phase is similar to that of 5CB, 6CB and 7CB. In particular, the activation enthalpy decreases with increasing pressure and the activation volume decreases ...

Lifshitz point in the smectic A phases

2014 The triple point where three smectic phases are present (the Sm A1, the Sm A2 and the Sm à phases) is a Lifshitz point associated with a polarization wave parallel to the layers. We show that interesting dielectric properties may be observed in the vicinity of this Lifshitz point. J. Smectic a1 ↔ a2 transition of n c-60.8 : a two-dimensional phase separation of the molecular endgroups

2014 The smectic A1 ~ A2 phase transition of a one-component liquid crystalline system was studied with X-ray diffraction. The smectogen used was a polar but symmetrical smectogen, namely the 4-cyanohexyloxybenzylidene-4’-octylaniline. The intensities of the Bragg reflections were measured as a function of temperature. The experimental data were analysed according to a structural model describi...

Structural, Electrical, and impedance spectroscopy studies of Barium substituted nano calcium ferrites synthesized by solution combustion method.

Barium substituted nanocrystalline ferrites with chemical composition BaxCa1-xFe2O4 (x =0.0 to 0.25) BCAF were prepared by solution combustion method. The phase formation of mixed spinal structured ferrites was confirmed by PXRD analysis. The average crystallite size was calculated using Debye-Scherrer formula and it was found to be in the range of 27-44 nm. Surface morphology was analyzed by S...
